The scientific research activity of IHPS is interdisciplinary and applied, taking place within the Research Group for Plants, Soils and the Environment (ARIS –0416-004) and four research programs that are conducted at IHPS in cooperation with the University of Ljubljana and the Institute of Chemistry. The programs enable synergy of research, knowledge transfer, and innovation and contribute to the sustainable development of the agricultural and agri-food sector.

- Chemistry and structure of biologically active substances: study of bioactive compounds, chemical and biological properties, environmentally friendly isolation methods, high citation rate, international recognition and successful research projects.
- Biochemical and biophysical-chemical characterization of natural substances (https://www.bf.uni-lj.si/en/research/research-projects/100/biochemical-and-biophysicalchemical-characterization-of-natural-substances/): research into bioactive compounds and sustainable use of agri-food side streams, especially polyphenols and the circular economy.
- Agro-food and natural resources economics (https://www.bf.uni-lj.si/en/research/research-projects/95/agrofood-and-natural-resources-economics/): analysis of the economic competitiveness of the agri-food sector, development of technological-economic models and transfer of knowledge into practice, especially in the field of production economics, market analysis and entrepreneurial decision-making in hop growing.
