Since 2005, it has also been published online. It publishes contributions from Slovenian and international authors in the broader field of agronomy, with emphasis on hop growing, hemp, and the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants.

One issue is published annually.

The journal is indexed in: COBIB.SI, EBSCO, CAB Abstracts.

Hop Bulletin publishes articles free of charge (no publication fees). Articles are published under the international license CC BY 4.0 (Attribution 4.0 International).

The journal provides immediate open access to published peer-reviewed scientific and professional content, based on the principle that open science enables greater global knowledge exchange. All contributions are published and permanently stored in the national repository dLib.si.

Submission of manuscripts

If you wish to publish an article in the current year’s issue, please submit the title and a short abstract to the editorial office by the end of August of the same year. Within two weeks, the editorial office will notify the author whether the topic falls within the scope and mission of the journal.

Authors must submit their manuscripts to the editorial office by 25 October of the current year by e-mail, using the Submission Form (template) available on the journal’s website. The entire peer-review process is completed by 25 November.

All contributions undergo double-blind peer review, and when necessary, triple review. Reviewers are mostly members of the editorial board; depending on the topic, external experts may also be invited.

Authors are responsible for the linguistic correctness of their manuscripts.

When submitting an article, authors must also attach a signed »Permission for publication in Hop Bulletin and statement on the transfer of material copyright«. This permission must be signed by all text authors and any authors of photographs. By doing so, they agree that their contributions will be published online, free of charge and open access. After publication, the corresponding author must provide a signed consent to publication (a scanned document is acceptable).

All articles must include a bilingual (Slovenian and English) title, abstract, and keywords. Manuscripts are written in either Slovenian or English.

Journal Focus

The journal accepts original and review scientific articles as well as professional articles primarily in the fields of hop growing and brewing, hemp, and the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants, and, where possible, also in the broader fields of agriculture and agri-food systems.

Author Responsibilities

If there are actual or potential conflicts of interest based on financial, personal, or professional relationships with third parties or institutions, authors must inform the editorial office in a cover letter upon submission. Authors must ensure that their work is entirely original, and if they have used the work and/or statements of other authors, appropriate references or citations must be included. Authors may be asked to provide raw research data related to their article during the review process, and in the spirit of open science, it is encouraged that they ensure open access to such data.

By signing the »Permission for Publication in Hop Bulletin«, authors agree to the following:

  • they grant the publisher the right of first publication under the CC BY license;
  • they confirm that all co-authors are aware of the content of the article and their co-authorship;
  • they guarantee that the content of the article has not been previously published, except in the form of abstracts, parts of public presentations, or theses (graduate or doctoral), and that the article is not under review elsewhere for publication;
  • they confirm that the institutions and/or funders of the research in which or under which the work was carried out are directly or indirectly informed of the publication;
  • after publication, they will respect copyright and cooperate with the editorial office in the event of a retraction or correction of the article.

Open Science and Research Data Management

Hop Bulletin supports open access to research data, which form the foundation of modern scientific research.

About Research Data

Research data are data obtained through various methods, used to understand, test, or confirm hypotheses and draw conclusions, and which are generated or processed in the course of research. They come in many formats and forms: notes, interviews, photographs, transcriptions, numerical data from studies, computer program codes, etc. If data are not in digital form, it is advisable to assess whether such material can be digitized to facilitate its storage in a data repository. A data repository enables the storage and access of different types of data, e.g. research data, public sector data, and related documentation.

Data accessibility increases the transparency and verifiability of research findings and enhances their usability in future research, thereby improving the efficiency of resources already invested in data collection. Sharing data can also support the career development of researchers, as it increases the visibility of their work and opens opportunities for collaboration with new partners.

Policy on Mandatory Citation of Research Data

In accordance with the Regulation on the Implementation of Scientific Research, the co-funder of the journal, the Public Agency for Research and Innovation of the Republic of Slovenia (ARIS), requires the editorial office to ensure that authors provide open access to research data used in the preparation of their article prior to publication. The data must be prepared in accordance with the FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reusability).

Exceptions to Full Open Access

There are cases where data cannot be shared completely openly due to legal, ethical, or other justified reasons — for example, when they involve personal data requiring protection (see EU General Data Protection Regulation), when the material includes trade secrets or other commercial information regulated by law, or when the data pose security risks. The regulation understands open access to research data and other research results from publicly funded research in accordance with the principle “as open as possible, as closed as necessary.”

List of Trusted Repositories

Authors must publish research data in trusted data repositories, archives, or centers that provide appropriate access regimes. It is recommended that research data be published under a Creative Commons license (CC BY 4.0 or CC0 1.0) or equivalent licenses.
Trusted repositories recommended by the journal’s co-funder should be used.

Citation of Research Data

Authors must properly cite all data used, or, in a data availability statement, adequately describe them if the data are not digitized or are not published due to restrictions. A link to the published research data (e.g., DOI) must be included in the reference list of the article and, where appropriate, also in a footnote.

Responsibilities of Authors, Editors, and Reviewers

During the submission process, authors must provide access to research data at least to editors and reviewers. Upon publication of the article, the final version of the research data must be deposited in an appropriate data repository.
It is the responsibility of editors and reviewers to assess whether the article is based on research data (own/original or reused). If an editor or reviewer determines during peer review that such data already exist and have not been properly cited by the author, they are obliged to request the author to revise the article accordingly.
